How to Burn a Candle Properly

A Ritual Worth Doing Right

Burning a candle the right way doesn’t only make it last longer—it makes the experience better: cleaner air, stronger fragrance, and a prettier flame.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get the most out of every candle.

  1. Trim the Wick (Every Time) Why: A long wick creates a bigger flame, leading to black soot, flickering, and wasted wax. How: Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn (even the first one!). ✂️ Use wick trimmers, scissors, or even nail clippers
  2. Let It Burn Long Enough (First Burn = Memory Burn) Why: Wax has memory. If you don’t let the entire top layer melt, it may tunnel on future burns. How: Burn for 1–3 hours the first time, or until the melt pool reaches the edges of the container. No more sad tunnels or wasted wax.
  3. Don’t Burn Too Long Why: Over-burning (more than 4 hours) can cause the wick to mushroom or the glass to overheat. How: Snuff it after 3–4 hours, let it cool, then relight.
  4. Keep It Away from Drafts Why: Windy spots cause uneven burning, soot, and flickering flames. How: Place candles away from fans, open windows, or air vents.
  5. Center the Wick Why: A drifting wick can lead to uneven melts or scorched glass. How: After extinguishing, gently reposition the wick while the wax is still soft
  6. Store It Smart Why: Sunlight and heat can discolor wax and weaken fragrance. How: Store in a cool, dry place with the lid on.
  7. Burn It on a Heat-Safe Surface Protect your furniture from heat rings and glass cracking by placing candles on coasters or trays.
  8. Know When to Say Goodbye Stop burning when about one half inch of wax remains. This prevents the glass from overheating and possibly breaking.
  9. Bonus: Candle + Tea = Peak Vibes! Light your favorite The Tea & Candle Company fragrant coconut wax candle, pour a cup of our flavorful tea. Let the soft glow carry you through your mindful moment for a true sensory experience.
